The spatial planning procedure for the Lower Saxony section of the offshore grid connections BalWin1 and BalWin2 has been completed. This establishes the onshore corridor in which Amprion will further plan the specific routes for the lines. The regional planning determination also includes the potential converter sites for BalWin1 and their connection to the Wehrendorf substation.
The offshore grid connection systems BalWin1 and BalWin2 connect offshore wind farms to the onshore transmission grid. Coming from the North Sea, the submarine or underground cables run to their network connection points in Wehrendorf, Lower Saxony (BalWin1), and Westerkappeln, North Rhine-Westphalia (BalWin2).
In late July 2023, Amprion submitted the documentation for the spatial planning procedure to the Office for Regional Development Weser-Ems (Amt für regionale Landesentwicklung , ArL). Subsequently, the plans were presented and discussed in public information events. Now, the ArL has published its regional planning determination. It confirms the preferred route corridor presented by Amprion with the proposed changes made during the procedure. Additionally, the potential converter sites "Am Wehsand-Ost" and "In der Strothe," as well as their respective alternating current connections, are classified as spatially and environmentally compatible.
Amprion plans to submit the documents for the approval procedures in 2025, which will determine the specific route and other aspects such as construction execution. The now defined corridor forms the basis for further planning.
