Sudan's Ministry of Water Resources and Electricity and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) agreed on the funding of a long-term wind energy project in the country starting in 2015.
Sudan and the UNDP signed the project agreement, which will aim to diversify the country's power sources, limit its reliance on fossil fuel, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The government invested US$ 213 million in the five-year project, and the Global Environment Facility and the UNDP will deliver an additional US$ 4 million to its budget next January. The UNDP expects that the project’s first wind farm will be installed in the Dongola area of the Northern State. A 5MW wind farm will be installed in 2015 and by the end of the project in 2019, a 100MW wind farm will be established.
