Brazilian electrical engineering group WEG has won its first contract to supply wind turbines. The order is for 90MW for a wind farm in the northeast of Brazil, which is due to begin operations by January 2016.
WEG has a joint venture with Spanish wind turbine designer and manufacturer M Torres Olvega for the Brazilian market. The machines will be produced in WEG’s Jaraguá do Sul manufacturing plant in Santa Catarina state, and the company estimates that around 80% of the turbines' content will be supplied from Brazil. The wind turbines will have a capacity of 2.3MW. The construction of the first prototype of the machine, based on M Torres’ direct-drive technolgy, has already begun, and field tests and certification are due to take place in mid 2013.
