Founded in 1976 by David Holt Snr as a small family-run workshop specialising in carbon brush gear, the Grantham-based company has grown into an international manufacturer of slip rings and fibre optic rotary joints. Now led by third-generation Chief Executive Officer David Holt Jnr, with his son Alex recently joining the business, BGB supplies components for large-scale wind turbines across Europe and the USA. In addition to the wind energy sector, the company also serves customers in the aerospace, wastewater and automotive industries.
Rather than moving production overseas, BGB has continued to manufacture in the United Kingdom. Over the past five decades, the company has supported around 40 apprentices from local education providers, including Grantham College, West Grantham Academy, Lincoln College, Priory College and The King's School.
BGB expanded into the USA around 20 years ago. The expansion was led by Chief Design Officer Jim Wood, who joined the company as an apprentice and has been with the business for 30 years.
The company has also invested in its Dysart Road headquarters in Grantham, developing the site into a modern manufacturing facility powered in part by solar panels. Recent investments include robotic production cells, artificial intelligence-driven machine monitoring and testing facilities that simulate the operating conditions experienced by wind turbines.
