Dominion Energy has announced the successful launch of Charybdis, an offshore wind turbine installation vessel compliant with the Jones Act, from land to water. The 472-foot vessel is under construction at the Brownsville, Texas shipyard of Seatrium, a global marine and offshore engineering group, utilising domestically-sourced steel.
At its peak construction phase, over 1,200 workers were engaged in this project. Upon completion, the vessel will be based in Hampton Roads. Fabricated with over 14,000 tons of domestic steel, with nearly 10,000 tons sourced from suppliers in Alabama, West Virginia, and North Carolina, the vessel is equipped to handle turbine sizes of 12MW or larger. The vessel will be deployed for installing the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) farm. The CVOW project has secured a final construction air permit from the Environmental Protection Agency, marking the acquisition of the 11th and final federal permit necessary to commence offshore construction. Offshore monopile installation is scheduled to commence in May.
