The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) has unveiled plans for the expansion and improvement of the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal, a 30-acre facility designed and operated by MassCEC for the construction, assembly, and deployment of offshore wind projects.
The project will involve the acquisition of four adjacent properties, redevelopment of an existing bulkhead with a new high bearing capacity quayside, and the construction of a new office and warehouse building. Upon completion, the expansion will increase the heavy-lift storage area by five acres, bringing the total to 26 contiguous acres—a 24% increase. Additionally, the project will extend the terminal's heavy-lift quayside to 1,200 linear feet and provide extra office and warehouse space for tenants.
This expansion is essential for maintaining and enhancing Massachusetts' competitiveness in the growing offshore wind industry, ensuring that the state can meet the rising demand for port facilities capable of handling larger and heavier turbine components.
