TenneT is making steady progress in grid investments to support renewable energy ambitions in the Netherlands and Germany with a strong focus on wind energy.
TenneT invested EUR 10.6 billion in 2024 to expand and modernise electricity grids in the Netherlands and Germany. This marks a 38% increase from 2023, reflecting government ambitions for energy security and renewable energy development.
The company is working on fourteen offshore wind connection projects to increase capacity from 12.2 GW to 42.4 GW by 2031. Two new 2 GW connections, BalWin4 and LanWin1, have begun cable production, while major onshore projects, such as SuedLink and SuedOstLink in Germany and Southwest 380 kV in the Netherlands, are progressing.
Grid congestion remains a challenge, but measures are being taken to improve efficiency. In Germany, redispatch costs fell to EUR 2.6 billion due to new grid connections reducing curtailment. The Netherlands introduced flexible transmission tariffs, allowing customers to adjust grid use based on demand.
To ensure continued investment, the Dutch state provided EUR 44 billion in shareholder loans to TenneT for infrastructure projects through 2026. Meanwhile, the company has reorganised into two national transmission system operators, TenneT Netherlands and TenneT Germany, under TenneT Holding.
TenneT’s efforts aim to strengthen energy security, affordability, and sustainability, ensuring the grid can support increasing amounts of wind energy.
