Energy companies from Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam have signed a Joint Development Agreement aimed at exploring the export of renewable electricity from Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore, marking a step forward in regional energy cooperation.
Representing Malaysia is the MY Energy Consortium, an unincorporated partnership between Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas). This group will work with a consortium made up of PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC)—part of Vietnam’s national energy group Petrovietnam—and Sembcorp Utilities, a subsidiary of Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries.
The consortia will focus on assessing the potential of Vietnam’s renewable energy sources, particularly offshore wind, to support cross-border electricity supply. The plan includes evaluating the feasibility of exporting electricity via a new subsea cable, routed through the Peninsular Malaysia National Grid. Additional renewable generation and storage options may be integrated to support firm power delivery.
Both consortia will coordinate closely with relevant national authorities throughout the development process, securing the necessary approvals at each phase as they explore options for regional electricity integration and interconnection.
