Representatives from Spain’s main ports involved in offshore wind development have agreed on the need to accelerate deployment of the sector and strengthen coordination across the value chain.

Navantia’s Fene shipyard highlighted the importance of reducing project risk for developers and emphasised the role of ports as industrial enablers. This includes large assembly areas, sufficient draught and proximity to offshore wind sites, all of which can help reduce logistics costs and support timely project delivery.

The discussion brought together representatives from the Port of A Coruña, Port of Ferrol–San Cibrao, Port of Tarragona, Port of Castellón and Port of Las Palmas.

Participants examined the role of ports as strategic logistics and industrial hubs across the offshore wind value chain, including component assembly, system integration and operations and maintenance activities. These functions were identified as key to supporting project viability.

The session also highlighted the potential for port infrastructure to reduce the carbon footprint of offshore wind projects through shorter transport routes, improved logistics planning and more efficient operations.

Port representatives outlined ongoing investments to adapt facilities for offshore wind, including expanded operational areas, improved access, appropriate draught conditions and higher load-bearing capacity for large components. They also pointed to the need for more stable long-term investment frameworks to support development.

The meeting further stressed the importance of closer coordination between port authorities, industry stakeholders, developers and public administrations to anticipate future sector requirements and support orderly growth.
