The Crown Estate has begun early market engagement for Offshore Wind Leasing Round 6, ahead of a planned launch in the first half of 2027. The new leasing round could accommodate around 6 GW or more of offshore wind capacity. Development is expected to focus mainly on areas off the North East of England, in water depths suitable for fixed-bottom wind, subject to stakeholder engagement and alignment with the National Energy System Operator’s system planning.
Site locations and boundaries will be refined through consultation with industry and other stakeholders. The final capacity offered in Round 6 will be informed by system planning and ongoing engagement with the market.
Round 6 will be the first leasing process delivered under the Crown Estate’s Marine Delivery Routemap, a framework designed to support long-term planning of seabed use across sectors. The approach aims to improve coordination with energy system development, including alignment with the National Energy System Operator’s strategic plans.
While developers will determine the most suitable technologies for individual projects, the identified areas are expected to favour fixed-bottom offshore wind, reflecting water depth and existing supply chain capabilities.
The Crown Estate is also seeking feedback on potential commercial structures for the leasing round to assess market interest and feasibility.
The UK’s offshore wind pipeline currently includes nearly 17 GW in operation and a further 12 GW under construction.
