Enercon has installed the prototype of its new E-175 EP5 E2 wind turbine, with a rated output of 7.0 MW, in Wachendorf, Lower Saxony, Germany. The turbine is mounted on a hybrid tower with a hub height of 162 metres.
While the rotor diameter remains 175 metres, the upgraded version offers increased nominal output and energy yield compared to the existing 6.0 MW model. This improvement is due to a redesigned generator, which features an external rotor in the E2 model. To facilitate transport, the generator—which is larger in diameter—has been designed to be separable. It is delivered in two halves from the factory and assembled on-site during installation.
