Amprion has revised the commissioning dates for the offshore grid connections BalWin1 and BalWin2. The grid operator made this adjustment after recently awarding the final major contracts for implementation. BalWin1 is now scheduled to go into operation in 2030, and BalWin2 in 2031, which is one to two years earlier than originally planned.
BalWin1 and BalWin2 will connect wind farms in the North Sea to the onshore transmission network, running largely parallel both offshore and onshore. Each project can transmit 2,000 MW. The cables run 155 and 165 kilometres offshore, passing under the island of Norderney to reach the coast near Hilgenriedersiel. On land, about 205 and 215 kilometres of underground cables will be laid. The projects will then diverge to reach their respective grid connection points in Wehrendorf (BalWin1) and Westerkappeln (BalWin2).
