Morocco has announced its first offshore wind power project, a 1000 MW wind farm to be developed off the coast of Essaouira. The project forms part of the country’s broader strategy to tap into coastal wind resources to reduce energy dependence and support industrial development.
The wind farm is among the first initiatives backed by the Blue Mediterranean Partnership, a multilateral fund that supports projects linked to the sustainable blue economy. Initial funding will be used for feasibility studies and technical assistance. Construction is expected to begin by 2029. The project may also encourage growth in domestic industry, with opportunities for local manufacturing and technical services.
