The approval process for the BalWin1 offshore grid connection in the North Sea’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) has begun. Submarine cable installation is scheduled to start in 2028, with commissioning planned for 2030.
Offshore wind farms in the EEZ fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). The approval process includes the BalWin alpha converter platform and the 121 km submarine cable system, both located beyond the 12-nautical-mile limit. The assessment focuses on maritime and air traffic safety as well as marine environmental protection. Public and regulatory consultations commenced on 17 March 2025. Amprion anticipates initial feedback from the consultation process in the coming weeks. BSH will then evaluate the project, balancing various interests, with the aim of granting approval by mid-2026.
