bp has formally withdrawn its transmission connection application for the 2500MW Beacon Wind project located off New York's coast. The company explained that the withdrawal will provide additional time to thoroughly review the project’s design and configuration.

bp noted that since the initial submission of its application and securing a queue position, New York’s method for connecting offshore wind projects has shifted towards a more coordinated approach to offshore transmission.

The decision to withdraw the application follows a prior request by bp for a one-year delay from the New York Public Service Commission, reflecting the broader market uncertainty following the federal suspension of offshore permitting during President Donald Trump’s administration. This delay was also intended to enable bp to reassess its proposed point of interconnection within the city.

Originally submitted in 2022, the application detailed a transmission system designed to link the Beacon Wind project from the boundary of New York State territorial waters to a grid connection point at the Astoria Power Complex in Queens. On 19 February, BP’s legal representatives, Young/Sommer LLC, notified the New York Public Service Commission that the withdrawal of its Article VII Application was effective immediately, and without prejudice to future submissions.

This decision comes on the heels of New York State’s announcement that its forthcoming offshore wind tender may be limited to generation-only projects, in which offshore wind developers would not be responsible for the offshore grid connection.
