Enova has awarded funding to Fortius Offshore Wind and Fram Wind Solutions to support the development of two floating offshore wind projects at the METCentre demonstration site off Karmøy in Rogaland, Norway. The projects will test and demonstrate technologies including floating foundations for large turbines, mooring systems, and methods for constructing and operating the installations.
These are among the areas where costs need to be reduced to improve the commercial viability of floating offshore wind. Each of the four turbines will have a capacity of 18.5 MW.
The projects were selected through a competitive process. Evaluation criteria included energy production relative to the funding requested, the potential for wider adoption of the technologies, carbon footprint, effects on biodiversity and prospects for reducing costs in the future.
Fortius Offshore Wind will receive NOK 2 billion and Fram Wind Solutions NOK 1.94 billion, subject to project implementation.
