The Salamander Offshore Wind Farm, developed by the Salamander Wind Project Company Limited—a joint venture between Ørsted, Simply Blue Group, and Subsea7—has been granted Planning Permission in Principle for the onshore elements of its proposed floating wind development. The project is located 35 km off Peterhead on Scotland's East Coast.
The application for the onshore substation and related infrastructure was submitted to Aberdeenshire Council in August 2024 under the Town and Country Planning Act (Scotland) 1997. A second application, submitted to the Scottish Government’s Energy Consents Unit, seeks approval for the wind farm’s energy balancing infrastructure, including a battery storage system to stabilise the electricity grid. This application is progressing through assessment.
The project is also awaiting a decision from the Scottish Government’s Marine Directorate regarding the Section 36 consent for the offshore array and associated licenses. Salamander Offshore Wind Farm successfully secured an Innovation bid in Crown Estate Scotland’s Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) leasing round, signing an Exclusivity Agreement for the seabed lease in May 2023.
