LS Eco Advanced Cables (LSEAC), a joint venture between LS Group and Global Interconnector Group, has launched a five-week public consultation on its plans to build a high-voltage subsea cable manufacturing facility at the Port of Tyne. The cables would be used to transmit electricity generated by offshore wind farms to the UK mainland.
Although still in the early planning stages, the proposed investment is estimated at around £923 million. The consultation runs from 14 May to 18 June and invites feedback from local residents, businesses and organisations ahead of a planning application to South Tyneside Council later this year.
The facility is expected to create 500 direct jobs and support a further 1,000 across the wider supply chain, including high-skilled roles in engineering. LSEAC, in partnership with the North East Combined Authority and the Port of Tyne, plans to work with local schools, colleges and universities to support workforce training and skills development.
The site would include a range of industrial buildings such as manufacturing and testing areas, offices, and a 202-metre tall tower for cable sheathing and stretching.
