Cumulative installed capacity of wind power in Japan reached 5,840.4 MW at the end of December 2024, according to preliminary figures compiled by the Japan Wind Power Association. In 2024, new installations added a gross capacity of 703.3 MW from 170 units across 23 windfarms nationwide. When excluding windfarms that have been removed, the net installed capacity for the year was 663.0 MW from 120 units at 15 windfarms, resulting in a cumulative total of 5,840.4 MW from 2,720 units.

Japan’s wind power capacity reaches 5,840MW

In the offshore wind power sector, the Ishikari Bay New Port Offshore Wind Farm has recently begun operation, contributing as a new large-scale project to the overall increase in installed capacity. This development follows the commencement of operations at both the Akita Port Offshore Wind Farm and the Nyuzen Offshore Wind Power Farm in 2023. Regionally, the Hokkaido area experienced an increase of approximately 455 MW compared to the previous year, making it the leading region in Japan for wind power capacity. In addition, the capacity of individual wind turbines continues to grow in size.

As of the end of December 2024, full-scale offshore wind power generation projects that require ship access rather than direct land access include several installations.

The Sakiyama 2MW Floating Offshore Wind Turbine, a floating project, began operations in April 2016 and consists of one unit with a capacity of 2.0 MW.

The Choshi Offshore Wind Power Plant, a fixed installation, started in January 2019 with one unit rated at 2.4 MW.

In May 2019, the Hibiki Floating Offshore Wind Turbine was commissioned; it is a floating type with one unit providing 3.0 MW of capacity.

The Noshiro Port Offshore Wind Farm, a fixed project that began operations in December 2022, comprises 20 units with a total capacity of 84.0 MW.

The fixed Akita Port Offshore Wind Farm, which started in January 2023, consists of 13 units delivering a capacity of 54.6 MW.

The Nyuzen Offshore Wind Power Farm, another fixed installation, was commissioned in September 2023 with three units providing 7.5 MW of capacity.

Finally, the Ishikari Bay New Port Offshore Wind Farm, a fixed project that began in January 2024, comprises 14 units with a total capacity of 99.9 MW.

In total, these seven windfarms consist of 53 units with a combined capacity of 253.4 MW.
