Equinor has announced that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has granted approval for the Large Generator Interconnection Agreement (LGIA) signed between the company's Empire Wind 1 project, New York ISO (NYISO), and Consolidated Edison Company of New York.
This approval enables the Empire Wind 1 offshore wind project to establish a connection through the Sunset Park Onshore Substation at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT) to the New York City electrical grid at Con Edison's Gowanus substation, facilitating the delivery of 810MW of renewable power. This development represents the latest milestone in a series of accomplishments for Empire Wind 1. The project was provisionally selected as a winner in New York's fourth offshore wind solicitation (NY4) on February 29. Furthermore, the project obtained approval for its federal Construction and Operations Plan from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management the previous month, and in December 2023, the New York Public Service Commission issued the project's Article VII Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need.
