GE Vernova has disclosed that a manufacturing defect caused a turbine blade to fail at the Vineyard Wind offshore project near the coast of Massachusetts this month.
The turbine blade, created at the company's facility in Gaspé, Canada, broke on 13 July and scattered potentially hazardous debris on Nantucket Island's beaches. According to GE Vernova, a preliminary investigation found that inadequate bonding was the cause of the breakage and noted that their quality assurance programme should have detected the issue. The company plans to re-inspect all its offshore wind blades to identify any possible defects. Around 150 blades have been produced at the Gaspé facility.
