MIT and GE Vernova have announced the creation of the MIT-GE Vernova Energy and Climate Alliance, marking the start of a five-year collaboration focused on research, education, and career opportunities. The partnership will involve students, faculty, and staff across MIT’s five schools and the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, with an emphasis on three key areas: decarbonization, electrification, and the acceleration of renewable energy.
Through this alliance, GE Vernova will sponsor research at MIT and provide philanthropic support for MIT research fellowships. The company will also participate in corporate membership programs and professional education initiatives at MIT.
The alliance represents a $50 million commitment and will be managed within MIT’s Office of Innovation and Strategy. It will fund approximately 12 annual research projects, as well as three master’s student projects in MIT’s Technology and Policy Program. The projects will focus on overcoming challenges in clean energy development, storage, and the creation of robust systems to integrate sustainable energy sources like solar, wind, advanced nuclear reactors, and green hydrogen.
The projects will be selected by a joint steering committee from MIT and GE Vernova, following an annual call for proposals.
In addition to research, the collaboration will establish around eight endowed GE Vernova research fellowships for MIT students, as well as 10 student internships across GE Vernova’s global operations. GE Vernova will also sponsor programming through MIT’s New Engineering Education Transformation (NEET), providing career-oriented experiential opportunities for students. Furthermore, the alliance will offer professional education for GE Vernova employees.
