Van Oord has taken delivery of its new offshore installation vessel Boreas during a ceremonial event at the Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore Ltd. shipyard in China. Named after the Greek god of the northern winds, Boreas is designed to transport and install next-generation foundations and turbines for offshore wind farms.
The vessel measures 175 metres in length and features a 155-metre-high boom capable of lifting over 3,000 tonnes. Its four 126-metre legs allow it to be jacked up and operate in waters up to 70 metres deep, enabling it to install offshore wind turbines of up to 20 MW capacity. Boreas will now sail to the Netherlands for final outfitting, including the installation of specialised equipment for foundation storage and handling. The christening ceremony will also take place there. The vessel is expected to be commercially available by the third quarter of 2025.
