Japan and the USA have initiated a partnership aimed at reducing costs associated with offshore floating wind projects. The collaboration was announced during Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s visit to Washington, where he met with US President Joe Biden.
The White House released a statement, indicating that Japan is the first international collaborator of the U.S. Floating Offshore Wind Shot. Both nations aim to pursue a global ambition aligned with the Wind Shot, considering their respective national circumstances, through the Clean Energy and Energy Security Initiative (CEESI). The focus is on achieving breakthroughs to lower technology costs, hasten decarbonisation, and bring benefits to coastal communities. Additionally, the United States has welcomed Japan’s newly-launched industry platform, the Floating Offshore Wind Technology Research Association (FLOWRA), which seeks to reduce costs and facilitate mass production of floating offshore wind through collaboration with academia.
