TWD has begun testing a new Pile Run Parachute PRP systemTWD has begun testing a new Pile Run Parachute (PRP) system developed to reduce pile run incidents during offshore wind foundation installation. Pile run—the uncontrolled descent of a monopile or pin pile into the seabed—poses a significant operational risk, particularly as turbines increase in size and projects move into deeper and more variable seabed conditions.

The PRP is an internal damping device designed to slow a pile’s descent during such events. Testing began at the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN), where TWD assembled the monopile and parachute, installed sensors, and carried out initial trials.

Early results indicated that the system can effectively slow the pile’s descent, with adjustments to improve the seal between the parachute and the monopile enhancing performance. Further validation and development work will continue in preparation for potential offshore deployment.
