Montrose Port Authority has reached the milestone of delivering 1 GWh of renewable electricity through its Plug Montrose shore power facility. The system enables offshore energy vessels to connect to the port grid and draw electricity certified with a Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin, allowing them to shut down diesel engines while berthed and maintain full onboard operations.
Plug Montrose became operational in April 2024 when the Norwegian anchor handler Magne Viking, operated by Viking Supply Ships and managed by Sea1 Offshore, was the first vessel to connect. Eighteen months later, the facility has supplied 1 GWh of power. The vessel that received the facility’s 1GWh milestone was Viking Supply Ships’ Brage Viking (sister to the Magne Viking), which was upgraded earlier this year to enable it to connect to shore power.
The service was self-funded by Montrose Port Authority through a joint venture with Plug Shore Power, the UK arm of Norway’s Plug.
