The German Federal Network Agency Bundesnetzagentur (BNetzA) has announced an increase in onshore wind auction volumes for 2024, reaching nearly 15 GW.

This updated volume represents a nearly 50% rise from the initial 10 GW target set for 2024. The additional 5 GW comprises volumes not allocated in undersubscribed auctions in 2023. The ceiling price remains unchanged at €73.5/MWh. BNetzA's decision to raise auction volumes is based on sustained improvements in onshore wind permitting. Coupled with other legislative alterations, this has spurred an increase in new wind energy permits. Germany permitted 7.5 GW last year alone, marking a rise of over 70% from 2022. The first quarter of 2024 witnessed an additional 1.2 GW in new onshore wind permits. BNetzA and the wind industry express optimism that this positive trajectory will persist, resulting in a pipeline of permitted projects substantial enough to fill the remaining three auction rounds of 4.1 GW each in 2024. Additionally, Germany plans to auction 8 GW of offshore wind this year, with an initial offshore wind tender of 5.5 GW already underway.
