Boskalis has introduced the latest addition to its fleet: a subsea rock installation (SRI) vessel with a cargo capacity of 45,500 metric tons. Scheduled for delivery in early 2026, the Windpiper will support offshore wind projects, with its first assignments expected in Northwest Europe.
The vessel is being developed by converting an existing new-build under Boskalis' supervision. It measures 227 metres in length, 40 metres in breadth, and has a total installed power exceeding 31,000 kW. Designed for flexible subsea rock placement, it features a moonpool for vertical fall pipe installation and an inclined fall pipe for protecting offshore structures, including wind turbine foundations.
With seven thrusters and DP2 certification, the Windpiper is optimised for demanding offshore environmentsThe vessel’s capacity, divided over two holds, makes it well-suited for projects with a long transit distance between the rock loading facilities and the project site, such as those along the North American East Coast, the Baltic Sea and the Southern North Sea. The vessel also offers over 100 single-occupancy cabins, providing accommodation for client representatives and crew members.
