Vattenfall has made the final investment decision for the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind farms, with BASF securing long-term access to renewable electricity. Construction of the wind farms is scheduled to begin in 2026, with operations expected to start in 2028.
Vattenfall will repurchase the shares in the Nordlicht cluster that BASF acquired in 2024. As part of the agreement, BASF will continue its collaboration with Vattenfall, securing renewable electricity for its chemical production in Europe.
The Nordlicht wind cluster will have a net capacity of more than 1.6 GW. The final investment decision for Nordlicht 2 remains conditional, pending the necessary permit. The wind farms are located 85 kilometres north of the island of Borkum in the German North Sea, with Nordlicht 1 having a capacity of around 980 MW and Nordlicht 2 around 630 MW.
