The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has approved the Construction and Operations Plan for the SouthCoast Wind Project, marking the final authorisation required after the Department of the Interior’s Record of Decision in December 2024.
Located approximately 26 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard and 20 nautical miles south of Nantucket, Massachusetts, the SouthCoast Wind Project will have a capacity of up to 2.4 GW, supplying offshore wind energy to Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
The approved plan includes up to 141 wind turbines and five offshore substations, with a maximum of 143 installation positions. The project also includes up to eight offshore export cables within two corridors, with potential landfall sites at Brayton Point or Falmouth, Massachusetts.
In response to environmental considerations, the final design removes six turbine positions from the northeastern section of the lease area to minimise impacts on foraging habitats and reduce wildlife displacement.
SouthCoast Wind is fully owned by Ocean Winds (OW).
