Over the next two years, ABO Energy plans to construct eleven substations across Germany to connect new wind, solar and battery parks to the grid. In the past, the developer has sold substations and their associated energy parks on a proportional basis to operators. For strategic reasons, ABO Energy now intends to retain ownership of substations in Germany, creating potential for additional income.
Financing for the first eleven substations has been secured through the ‘Climate Protection Campaign for Companies’ programme operated by the state-owned bank KfW. The substations are scheduled to be connected to the grid by the end of 2027. A syndicated loan of €45 million was arranged by IKB Deutsche Industriebank as bookrunner and syndicate leader, with Frankfurter Sparkasse and Taunus Sparkasse also participating. The total investment for the eleven substations amounts to around €71 million. ABO Energy expects to have access to further KfW-supported loans in the coming years to finance additional projects.
