GK Happo Noshiro Offshore Wind, a consortium consisting of Japan Renewable Energy Corporation (JRE), Iberdrola, and Tohoku Electric Power, has been chosen as the operator for a new 375 MW offshore wind farm to be situated off the coast of Happo Town and Noshiro City, Akita Prefecture, Japan.
This decision follows the consortium's participation in an auction under the "Law Concerning the Promotion of Utilization of Sea Area for Development of Offshore Renewable Energy Power Facilities." The designation as operator was granted on 22 March 2024 by the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry and Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism. Additionally, Akita Bank LTD will be contributing to the project.
The project aims to install 25 fixed-bottom foundation wind turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW, using monopile foundations off the coast of Happo Town and Noshiro City, Akita Prefecture. Construction is planned to begin in 2026, following necessary preparatory work, with operations scheduled to commence in 2029. JRE, Iberdrola, and Tohoku Electric Power will oversee all aspects of business execution, from development to operation. Akita Bank, along with its members, will collaborate with local businesses and support regional development efforts.
