The US administration has initiated a review of the federal approval previously granted for Equinor’s Empire Wind 2 offshore wind project off the coasts of New York and New Jersey. The decision relates to the project’s construction and operations plan and comes in the context of ongoing litigation brought by local residents and businesses.
According to a filing submitted to a federal district court in Washington this week, the Interior Department’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) intends to reconsider its approval of the plan. The legal challenge has argued that the project would have adverse impacts on nearby communities and marine use.
Empire Wind 2 represents the 1.3GW second phase of Equinor’s Empire Wind development. The first phase of the project has also faced setbacks following regulatory changes in the USA.
